This year I’ve decided to fight the winter blues with flowers! I started taking flower arranging classes courtesy of Phipps Conservatory. Did you know they offer certificate programs for things like floral design, landscape design, and botanical drawing??!! Yeah, I didn’t either! I found out a couple of months ago and knew it was the way to go. So far I’ve had three classes and have made three arrangements. I’ll be honest I’m really only pleased with one of them, can you guess which one?

Oh hey, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Soooooo, last time I got real angry at my blog and it’s publishing problem, maybe I should learn to save as I go. Just like school work. But anyway, hope everyone had a great holiday season and are looking forward to 2013! I sure am. This will be a big year for me. I’m hitting the 3-0, which I am psyched for and gettin’ hitched, also looking forward to that so it’s shaping up to be a fun year.
Unfortunately, as those of you with old homes know, winter can be a real bummer. The main part of our house was built around 1890 and is doing swell, the addition which houses the bathroom and kitchen and was built god knows when is a hot mess. Actually it’s a cold mess, I wish it was hot. There isn’t a heat source in our kitchen which can lead to some chilly days in there and the little baseboard heater in the bathroom doesn’t really keep up when it’s really cold, like below 30. I know, not that cold! So, last week Pittsburgh was in an arctic freeze, meaning multiple days under 20…gross. Having been through some “learning experiences” before with frozen pipes we planned ahead and last Monday went to sleep with our faucets dripping (which helps them to not freeze) buuttt of course it didn’t actually work. So Lou and I woke up Tuesday and tested the faucets and sad face, froze. We turned off the main water line to the house, in hopes of avoiding a disaster if there were any cracks or splits in the pipes. No water for flushing the toilet, showering, laundry, nothing.
Fast forward to Sunday, it’s been 5 whole days without water, so showering at our family’s and you know pooping on top of each other’s poop those kind of intimate things. The temperature is finally above freezing so we turn on the main water valve and cross our fingers. Small victory. Some, water works but not all, and no obvious leaks. So, we leave the water on and figure check back soon. Meanwhile a friend of ours was here to watch the Pens game and was investigating our plumbing woes when he said those fateful words, “do you hear something?”. NOOOOOO! Water is pouring out of an access panel in the kitchen ceiling (from the bathroom) all over the countertop, walls, dirty dishes, birth control and coffee pot. Only the most important things. I rushed to the basement and shut off the valve, and threw a trash can under the leak to catch the water. Yikes. What a mess. What a bummer. So, a plumber is coming tomorrow afternoon, hopefully there will only be one break and they can fix it on site. But that will be a gamble since the other frozen pipes were still frozen yesterday so it’ll be a crap shoot to see if there are other breaks or cracks. Everybody say your prayers, we need our water back for our sanity !!
This round of discomfort has pushed us to do some serious thinking about our house, and it looks like we’re going to have to do some major work on our addition. We’re thinking of tearing off the old aluminum siding, insulate and wrap it up tight and then bricking it to match the rest of the house. Big $$$ project. But definitely worth it. Unfortunately, the woman who sold us this house, didn’t care about doing things right or disclosing that there could be issues and not only do I not want to live like a pilgrim again but I couldn’t sell the house to some unsuspecting person knowing all of the problems we have had in the deep colds of winter.
Anyone else with frozen pipe stories? We could commiserate together.

Maybe the reason I can’t keep up with my blog is because I just wrote two posts and both disappeared when I hit publish. I wouldn’t even bother with a “have a happy fall” post all by itself! There was other stuff in there! AAAAAHHHHH. Now, that I’m over that I’m going back to sons of anarchy and maybe tomorrow I’ll do the post I meant to.

Well, it’s been a whirlwind since we got back from vacation (which was great)! My grandmother turned 90! Woooo! So I spent a day in Erie/Spartansburg with some family which was really nice. Then we finally addressed an issue with our dog. Little Oliver had a growth on his belly that showed up a couple of months ago and we bit the bullet and took him to the vet. Turns out it was a good thing we didn’t wait any longer, it was a Mast Cell Tumor. Basically doggy skin cancer. That was a kick in the gut. We scheduled surgery to have it removed and that happened a week ago. Poor little bugger has a badass 3 inch scare on his tummy but it’s not holding him back. So, the past week has been a little overwhelming with that and then being busy at work. But today we got good news from the vet that it looks like they got the whole tumor out with no lingering cells in the surrounding tissue!! Now, we just have to keep an eye out for any other lumps or bumps. Hopefully he’ll heal fast and be beating up Dougie in no time!
The Lou will be heading to the beach this weekend with his friends and I’m looking forward to some quality alone time! I’ve already got a thrifting date with my bestie and I’m going to do some repainting in the inside of the house. I’ve been wanting to re-do the upstairs hallway, I really wanted to wallpaper but Lou said “NO”. It’s such a bummer. It would be fabulous in a bright floral. sigh. So there’s that and the steps to the 3rd floor really need addressed. I started stripping and sanding them like 2 years ago, grimace, and never finished it. We’ve decided to just paint them because the floor should be replaced not refinished up there. I would like to do a pattern, like stripes or a stencil so we’ll see how the priming goes and go from there.
I also have some bulbs to plant! Hollyhocks and some tulips, unfortunately my little space is almost full so I can’t put too much more in there. Boo.
And I want to get a better routine going with this here blog! And maybe start stocking up on some goods to sell on Etsy! So many ideas! So many things I want to do!

I’ve been neglecting my blog. It’s true. I’ve been busy and not doing any house projects and it’s SUMMER! I want to enjoy it while it’s here! My dear friend Liz and her partner Jay were visiting from London so I spent some quality time with them and our other friends. We hit up some restaurants/bars, putt putt, ice cream, porches, and pools all in all a fantastic time. I’ve also been going to the gym hardcore. I’m actually enjoying it and the results (the most important part!).And now my baby brother’s getting married in 5 days, aaahhhh, and then off to our annual vacation to Myrtle Beach/St. Augustine, to say I’m excited is an understatement. The wedding is going to be so much fun! I love going to the beach every year, but it’s been stressful lately around these parts and to get away will be AMAZING. After that I hope to have a rejuvenated spirit and get to work on some house things.
I want to stencil our hallway, and work on our stairway to the 3rd floor. I also want to start up an Etsy store! I’ve been thinking about it for sometime and I’m excited to start putting stuff together and get it up and going. I think I’ll focus on vintage housewares, art, lighting, etc…and maybe some clothing and accessories thrown in there if I find some gems. I would also like to start an Etsy store for Lou to sell art prints in! So once I get mine figured out and get comfortable doing it he’ll be next!
I’m going to be honest and say there will probably not be anything posted for the next three weeks. But then, I vow to be back! and better than ever! Hope everyone is enjoying their summers as well!
